Doctor Orders Child And Parent Not To Speak In Welsh

The Welsh Not, one former symbol of anti-Welsh racism in Britain
The Welsh Not, one former symbol of anti-Welsh racism in Britain

From a report by the Daily Post newspaper in Wales:

“A hospital has apologised after a doctor asked a mum and her daughter to stop speaking Welsh.

The North Wales mum had taken her 15-year-old daughter to the emergency department at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd,  Bodelwyddan on Tuesday.

She said the doctor had made the comment when she was treating her daughter.

While the mum and daughter had a discussion in Welsh, the mum claimed the  doctor said she would take it as a “personal  insult” to her if they continued speaking in their own language

The mum said her daughter “was crying and upset.” She said her daughter replied that she had a right to speak Welsh.

Yesterday, Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board apologised for what it called an “insensitive and unacceptable” comment.”

  1. Ba chóir an dlí a chur ar an “dochtúr” sin! Sa chás áirithe seo, ní leor leithscéal a ghabháil leis na híospartaigh-caithfear cinntiú nach dtarlóidh a leithéad arís.

Cruthaíonn an eachtra seo gur féidir le duine dul ar an gcoláiste, céim sa leigheas a fháil agus fós gan a fhois aige/aici conas meas a léiriú ar chultúr dhaoine eile!

  2. Ná dearmad an scéal faoin macán nár tugadh cógais dó mar bhí faisnéis i mBreatnais clóite ar an oideas a thug a athair don chógaslann.

  3. As one commentator on a Welsh language site has pointed out, “could you imagine this happening if the mother and daughter were Polish or Pakistani …” Honestly, I really thought this sort of thing was well in the past, with professionals at least. The Language Comissioner is saying she needs an official complaint, and although she has the power to investigate cases where someone is prevented from speaking Welsh, she apparently can’t do anything more, just investigate and file a report. Don’t you just love bureaucracy.

    That doctor is an idiot.
Doesn’t he realise that such comments are insulting as hell?

    • WHy do you think the idiot is a male? The Doctor is a female. “She said the doctor had made the comment when she was treating her daughter.”

  5. Maybe the doctor wasn’t even English.

I’m not Irish, but I would never order people who speak Irish among themselves to stop doing that. That’s extremely, rude, disrespectful and offensive.

    • More than likely she was English, or anglo-Welsh. Basically, for reasons that aren’t entirely to do with colonialism, and aren’t entirely their fault, the English are by and large simply unable to grasp that everyone in the world doesn’t naturally wish to speak English all the time, and if they don’t they’re either to be pitied as having a disability, or dispised for “trying it on”.

      • Isn’t that the truth. Why do they speak Welsh (or Irish) when they can speak English “anyway”? I’ve even seen online Anglophone commentators argue that all non-English speakers should speak English as it the world’s only “international” and “pan-human” language. To speak any other is “tribalistic” or “anti-multicultural” (!).
