While I’m not much of a Star Trek fan I do have some nostalgic fondness for the original show and its cinematic spin-offs, with later iterations of the franchise holding decreasing levels of interest for me after Star Trek: The Next Generation and the early seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The most recent examples of the series, Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, have left me cold and judging by the reaction of audiences and critics alike I’m not the only one. Thankfully Red Letter Media’s stalwart cultural commentator Mr Plinkett is on hand to explain why in his new Picard review on YouTube.

I loved the early Star Trek TV series and the movies. Never could abide Dr Who, though. Even as a youngster I couldn’t stand it.

I liked the Jon Pertwee period because it at least attempted to be more science fiction, with a more real-world aspect. Kind of went off later iterations, though would watch them. The most modern ones are all big emoting which is okay if you like that kind of thing but I find a bit predictable. In a way it’s a fantasy show.

Star Trek has run its course so long ago, that it’s gotten ridiculous. I’d say that by the Fifth Movie and the first season or two of Next Generation…….they’d have done better to quite while ahead.
To me the height of Star Trek was really the second and third movies. After that? Meh!!!
After that it became less and less clear how this Federation wasn’t a military dictatorship.
I’d rather see any number of other things brought to the screen rather than another Star Trek iteration.
