The PUP Do The Time Warp Again!

The UVF commemoration in Craigavon - or something close enough
The UVF commemoration in Craigavon – or something close enough

Below are three video clips of a speech last weekend by Billy Hutchinson, leader of the Progressive Unionist Party or PUP, the political wing of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), one of several British terrorist organisations in Ireland. In it he praises the “… first Ulster Volunteers“, the British separatist militia founded in 1913 to overthrow the democratic desire of the majority of the population of the island of Ireland for full or limited autonomy from rule by Imperial Britain. Not too mention the right of the contemporary British Unionist minority in the north-east of Ireland to continue their “resistance” by “any means necessary” to democratic change in this country.

Good to see that one hundred years of evolving European and global history has had zero effect on militant British Nationalism in Ireland.

Dressing up and make believe are all very well but people want real politicians interested in tackling real political problems. Not a bunch of chancers who think that a flag flying over a building is a important burning issue. The sooner some of those who took part in that march on Saturday are rounded up on the word of that UVF supergrass the better for society here as well.

I’m all for historical re-enactments as a way of making history come alive or furthering historical inquiries and knowledge (the American and English do such things well and to be honest I enjoy such things). But some periods of history are more acceptable than others. Roundheads and Cavaliers are one thing but no one should wish to dress up as Brown Shirts to re-enact the Munich Putsch.

I view the UVF, historical or otherwise, in much the same way. As well to celebrate the Serbian irregulars in the Balkans during the 1990s with parades and dressing up!
