Though it is called the “Protestant Coalition”.
It only exists to further “the empowerment of the PUL (Protestant Unionist Loyalist) community”.
And it is self-described as an “anti-politics” grouping.
Ahem…
From the News Letter:
“A new political party seemingly born out of the flag protests will be launched on Wednesday.
The party, which the Electoral Commission confirmed has been registered with it, will be called The Protestant Coalition and describes itself as an “anti-politics political party”.
When asked why he was not joining the TUV — who would appear to share many of his political views — Mr Frazer said that there were people in various parties with whom he could agree and the new party would work with parties such as the TUV, UKIP and the PUP.”
What? No mention of the BNP, EDL and NF?
It’s a funny thing politics in the Six Counties you wait for one new Unionist party to show up and a totally different one then arrives. While Basil and John keep us all in suspence the Protestant Coalition arrive on the scene. The Protestant Coalition’s website states it is an “anti-politics, political party” whose priority is “the empowerment of the PUL (Protestant Unionist Loyalist) community”. It’s new leader is James Dowson a former fundraiser for the British National Party. Mr Dowson is currently out on bail and facing charges relating to the Union Flag protests. No doubt many other members of this new party will have made a name for themselves during the Union Flag protests. So what is a anti-politics,political party going to do for the North? Very little except cause trouble on the streets and of course loads of comedy moments over on the Loyalists Against Democracy website.

At least “anti-politics” is ideologically consistent with British Unionism in Ireland. If they threw in “anti-democracy” too they would be bang on the mark.
I like the positively Biblical overtones of the website.
“We bear no ill will to decent law abiding Roman Catholics…”
“We call upon all good and decent Protestants…”
“…to secure our birthright.”
“…our rights, traditions and sacred emblems…”
Who needs the Taliban or Islamic fundamentalists? We have the Uniban!

I wonder how Mr Dowson managed to set up a brand new political party without any access to a computer or a telephone? Using a computer or telephone would of course be a breach of his bail conditions. Maybe he used smoke signals or telepathy to contact his fellow Unionists.

Maybe he beat out a message on a Lambeg Drum.

I can’t see much point in devoting time or attention to either the P.U.P. or this new Party being set up by Willie Fraser. Let’s face it, virtually nobody votes for the P.U.P. : at the last Assembly election they couldn’t even get their most popular personality, Dawn Purves, returned under a P.R. system.
This new party, under the leadership of a crackpot and associated with right wing loonies, will, again, attract virtually no votes. They are a complete irrelevance. At least dissident Republicans have the sense and self-awareness not to stand for election knowing that they too would have no chance of being returned.
Rather than seeing the existence of these Parties as proof of the devotion of Unionists to violence and extreme right wing views, the opposite is the case : these parties have and will have little electoral support precisely because of their past and present associations with violence and their close connection with people like Mr Dowson and the B.N.P..
The implication is also that the U.U.P. and D.U.P. are racist and fascist : I think this is ludicrous. Of course, they are sectarian, but then so are Sinn Fein and the S.D.L.P. : that is the basis of Northern Irish politics and is, perhaps, the reason why almost 50% of the electorate don’t vote.
