Inés del Rio Prada, a member of ETA (the Basque separatist organisation) and Spain’s longest serving political prisoner, has been released from her thirty-year detention in a Galician prison in A Coruña following a decision by the European Court of Human Rights that her continued detention was unlawful. The judgment could effect the extended sentences of up to fifty-four ETA prisoners and follows a series of major demonstrations in the Basque Country demanding the release of all political prisoners housed in gaols across the Iberian peninsula. Despite a series of ceasefires and local initiatives by Basque political leaders the Spanish state and a number of governments of various hues have refused to engage in any meaningful way in the now dormant Peace Process. Parties supportive or associated with ETA presently form the second largest political block in the Basque Country.
