Back in August of 2013 the US-based current affairs website, MintPress News, gained considerable publicity when a report by its correspondents allegedly exonerated the Assad regime in Damascus of any involvement in three chemical weapon attacks that had taken place in the Ghouta district of the Syrian capital. Instead the MintPress team blamed the machinations of Saudi Arabia and the incompetence of fighters from the opposition Al-Nusra Front for the several hundred casualties that had occurred. Some months later Buzzfeed published a detailed investigation of these claims and of the independent news site itself which raised serious questions about its nature and role. Many of those points have yet to be answered, however I thought this very recent MPN interview with the parents of the American peace activist, Rachel Corrie, stands on its own merits. The twenty-three year old student was killed by the Israeli military in 2003 during a protest in the occupied Gaza Strip, becoming an icon of the Western peace movement.
