Unionists Outraged By Mafia III Game. World Asks, What Are Unionists?

Those damn Irish unionists are at it again! From the Australasian gaming website, Game Planet:

Irish Unionists call for ban on Mafia III’s “sick glamorisation of terrorism”

Irish Unionists are calling for a ban on sales of Mafia III, claiming one of its missions “glorifies” an Irish terrorist organisation.

Irish Democratic Unionist MP Jeffrey Donaldson told the Irish News that the game “could be seen as trivialising the suffering of innocent victims…”

Ooops! Meanwhile, according to the US site, Destructoid, the “Conservative Irish” are equally furious. Hold on, could they possibly be the same thing as the “Irish Unionists“?

Conservative Irish irate at ‘sick glamorisation’ of IRA in Mafia III

“Right-wing Northern Irish politicians are mad at a Mafia III mission where the protagonist does a job for the benefit of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

MP Jeffrey Donaldson of the right-wing Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which was called the Protestant Unionist Party at the time of Mafia III, was “very concerned” about the effect a mission in a video game could have on “impressionable” young minds.

Jim Allister, who leads an equally conservative DUP offshoot party called Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV), says entertainment has a “duty to avoid glorifying violence”…

The center-right Ulster Unionist Party, which governed Northern Ireland from 1921 to 1971 — so while Mafia III takes place — also got in on it, with Belfast UUP councillor Jim Rodgers saying he’d be contacting Mafia III’s creators.”

Poor unionist pols, perpetually misunderstood and misrepresented. But at least they got the right-wing Irish description right 😉

  1. Do they even know what kind of person the protagonist of this game is?

  2. Breandán Mac Séarraigh

I do hope that those ultra right wing Irish conservative people read this. It’s about time they got an external perspective on their particular brand of crazy. See yourself as others see you.
