Just a quick post to let readers know that An Sionnach Fionn is now available for users of Flipboard, the popular free mobile app which collects content (articles) from selected websites and social media platforms and presents them in the style of a digital magazine for smartphones, tablets and PCs. To add my blog to your reading list simply sign into your Flipboard desktop account and pop over to my profile, @AnSionnachFionn, or you can search for ASF using the terms, An Sionnach Fionn or AnSionnachFionn. If you prefer you can add the RSS feed from the blog instead, using the above search terms or alternatively typing in, https://ansionnachfionn.com/feed. Of course you can use the app itself on your mobile device to do all of the above as well. I have been using Flipboard for the last few years and can attest to its usefulness for keeping abreast of new articles and posts from your favourite webzines.

That said, as a blogger who wanted to add his own “official” website or “brand” to the platform, all I can say is, feck me, what a rigmarole. I rarely swear but then I’ve rarely been so annoyed by one website. Flipboard makes very little effort to accommodate small sites or blogs on its platform, being wholly geared to individual users or “publishing partners”. In other words, big corporate beasts like Salon or Time. I had hoped to do something as simple as set up my ASF official brand on Flipboard, create an in-app “magazine” using automatic updates from my WordPress RSS feed, and leave it at that. Not a chance. It doesn’t work, or it doesn’t meet the ridiculously OTT Flipboard criteria for syndicated feeds. Instead I shall have to manually add articles via an add-on browser-extension as and when they are published. Which is like so 2005. In any case I am less than happy with the results though hopefully they will suffice for now.

Just to add, contrast the above with the very similar Google Play Newsstand app (previously called, Currents), where An Sionnach Fionn is also available, and the levels of control there are absolutely second to none, despite Flipboard’s reputation as the far superior product. So if you wish to add ASF to your Google Newsstand reading list simply search inside the Android app for An Sionnach Fionn. The app itself is available for free from the Google Play store.

Finally, I’m writing a very simple, standalone “official” Android app for the blog. Basically just a wrapper for the mobile version, which should be available in the next few weeks.
