A taste of the modern myth-making to come in 2022 from the Fine Gael and Labour Party inheritors of the counter-revolutionaries of 1922-23? The Dublin Mint describes its “Pádraig Pearse 100th Anniversary Commemorative Medal“, issued for the centenary celebrations of 1916-2016.
“The commemorative depicts Pádraig Pearse alongside the Sword of Light, which was the name of the newspaper he edited on behalf of the Gaelic League. The reverse features the words ‘sworn to be free’ in Gaelic and English, taken from ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ (‘A Soldier’s Song’). This symbolises the journey that was continued by Michael Collins which eventually paved the way for the establishment of an Irish Free State in 1922 – and in so realised the vision of Pádraig Pearse and the Seven Signatories.”
