The 1922 Irish Free State Was Not The 1916 Irish Republic

A taste of the modern myth-making to come in 2022 from the Fine Gael and Labour Party inheritors of the counter-revolutionaries of 1922-23? The Dublin Mint describes its “Pádraig Pearse 100th Anniversary Commemorative Medal“, issued for the centenary celebrations of 1916-2016.

“The commemorative depicts Pádraig Pearse alongside the Sword of Light, which was the name of the newspaper he edited on behalf of the Gaelic League. The reverse features the words ‘sworn to be free’ in Gaelic and English, taken from ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ (‘A Soldier’s Song’). This symbolises the journey that was continued by Michael Collins which eventually paved the way for the establishment of an Irish Free State in 1922 – and in so realised the vision of Pádraig Pearse and the Seven Signatories.”

I don’t fucking think so!

  1. POBLACHT NA SAOR STAT NA hÉIREANN
THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC TO THE PEOPLE OF THE TWENTY SIX COUNTIES

FREE STATE MEN AND FREESTATE WOMEN:
In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, The Twenty Six Counties, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom.

So this what the “Voice of the Easter Rising” really read out according to these yahoos?

To use An Sionnach’s phrase: “I don’t fucking thing so” either!

  2. Sigh. The FREE STATE was neither free, or a full state. Technically it was still an autonomous self ruling part of the British Empire. It was not until the 1949 legislation that Ireland became a full Republic, with total sovereignty. Factual. Not Fantasy. The Catholic smothered free state, complete with Marian Laundry and dead babies, censorship, and sour official meanness. “They” cannot admit that this was th reality. Disgraceful that they are trying to use the leaders of the Irish Revolution to cover up their smug, corrupt, mendacious regime.

    1. Spot on – clearly the vision was a free, sovereign and whole (hence “the Twenty Six Counties”) Irish State. That vision has absolutely NOT been realised. It will not have been realised until we have ALL of our island back and govern all of it with “censorship and sour official meanness.” GRMA.

  3. …totally chopped that one up, Meant to refer to Ceannaire’s comment above in the hence part, Sorry.
