An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, To Resign At Midnight

And with one leap he is gone. Well, almost and after much hesitation and false starts. An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, has announced his resignation as the head of Fine Gael from midnight tonight. Though, in typical Éanna style, he will stay on as a caretaker leader, of government and party, until early June. So now the fun begins. My money is on Leo Varadkar, darling of the libertarian-right, though FG’s blue rinse brigade might not be so sure. However, how will Fianna Fáil react to a rival taking power who is popular with much of the conservative press? Here’s hoping for a scrappy internal selection process and an early general election.

  1. I think it has to be LV, if only to shore up the vote in Dublin. And yet, and yet… this is going to be interesting.

    • Varadkar would be the logical choice to appeal to the right-leaning metropolitan set. He ticks all the boxes and the press would love him. Coveney has a stronger rural and traditionalist appeal down south. However I’m not sure that this background would give him much of an advantage with non-FG voters. LV has enough urban middle-class charisma to appeal to non-FG voters in Greater Dublin while Coveney is too much of a mandarin type.

I reckon LV would be the tougher opponent for Fianna Fáil in the capital. They would certainly leech some votes to him.

I notice that Varadkar has been putting real effort into becoming fluent as Gaeilge for the last couple of years, sitting civil service exams and everything. Interesting.

  3. What is Varadkar in Irish ? The question should be what Irish is in Varadkar ?

    • His place of birth, citizenship, culture, accent and fluency in Irish? Just because his politics are fairly objectionable it does not follow that his identity should be up for questioning. He is 100% Irish. Just somewhat to the right. Actually, a lot to the right 🙂
